A little bit about me
Hey there! Thanks for stopping by! My name is Marla. I am a certified birth doula based in Forney, Texas. In addition, I am working towards becoming a certified postpartum doula, lactation consultant, and childbirth educator. I have been a preschool teacher for 7 years and I love all of my sweet kiddos that I’ve gotten to teach over the years. I love traveling, going to concerts, spending time with my family + friends, discovering different coffee shops, doing calligraphy, going to the beach, playing my ukulele, and sitting around a campfire with the people I love. Alongside all of these great things, one of my greatest joys in life is getting to assist mothers during pregnancy, labor, and childbirth! I consider it an incredible blessing to be a part of such an amazing moment of people’s lives. Thank you for considering me to be a part of yours.

What is a birth doula?
[ doo.lah ] noun
A person who provides emotional and physical support to a mother before, during, and after childbirth. A doula is not a medical professional and does not deliver babies or provide medical care.
A doula’s role is to offer non-judgmental and objective support, guidance, evidence-based education, and practical comfort measures to help a mother have the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.
A doula is a compassionate advisor that provides comfort, encouragement, and support during one of life’s most significant moments, a person who encourages, empowers, supports, and instills self-belief in the women they care for. They are masters at listening and will advise, encourage, and counsel all whilst reminding women of the strength they hold.
Also known as a birth companion, non-clinical birth worker, birth support, or birth coach.

A doula holds space.
“Holding space” is the practice of being fully present and supportive of someone else. Holding space involves creating a safe and accepting environment by listening attentively and offering unconditional support while allowing the other person to share their experiences and perspective to feel heard and understood.
Why “butterfly beginnings”?
Butterfly Beginnings. This name has precious meaning to me and gives a sweet purpose to my business. As I was trying to come up with a unique/meaningful name for my business, I knew that I wanted to somehow include my mother in the name. My mom was my best friend. She raised me and my siblings as a single mom and she did it with grace, ease, and a smile on her face. She was home. Not only was she my home but she became home to anyone that she came into contact with. She was a special woman and my most incredible blessing.
My mom unexpectedly passed away in 2019. I miss her more than I can eloquently put into words. One of the many ways that I like to honor her is through the way that I live my day-to-day life. I am who I am today because of my mother and so much of what I do is to honor her and her legacy. My opportunity to “mother the mothers” is one of the ways that I get to honor my precious mother. She was (in my possibly biased opinion) the BEST mother to ever walk this earth. And I had the absolute privilege of being her daughter. And NOW, I get the privilege of mothering other mothers. Although I am not yet a mother myself, I like to think that I have a nurturing spirit (much because of my mom) and I get to attempt to mimic her beautiful qualities in the mothers that I care for.
So why “Butterfly”? Well, glad you asked! Butterflies are a special symbol to me. Every time I see a butterfly, I think of Mom. They became a symbol to me after she died. I believe that it is one of God’s ways of sending me a sweet reminder of my mom. So when I see a butterfly it’s just a little reminder that my mother is with me in my heart always. She will always be a part of me and I will get to carry on her legacy for the rest of my life.
And why “Beginnings”? Well, this is YOUR beginning. The beginning of your baby’s life. The beginning of your journey as a parent to your child. The beginning of your pregnancy journey. It’s the beginning!
And now- for my favorite part. To tie all of these things together- butterflies in their very nature are born into this world quite similarly to how babies are born into the world. As a caterpillar grows into its full beauty as a butterfly within its chrysalis, your baby is growing into its complete body within your womb. And just as the butterfly emerges from its chrysalis, your baby exits your womb and enters into the world.
